Community Activities
Dublin Christian Mission: www.dcmlive.ie
Located directly beside our offices at Chancery Place, Dublin 7, this is the second oldest city mission in the world. It is non denominational and concentrates on youth and community work in several Dublin communites. It reaches out to communities experiencing poverty, high rates of drug abuse, broken homes, abuse and crime. It focuses on helping people find freedom and healing, encouraging them in turn to help others. Recognising the incredible potential of people from disadvantaged backgrounds, this mission provides an essential and invaluable service to our city and we are proud to provide sponsorship to assist with it’s work.
The Cappucin Day Center for Homeless People: www.homeless.ie
Located at 29 Bow Street, Dublin 7 next to Church Street Friary this incredible endeavour is run by Br Kevin Foley OFM Cap. and his admirable and inspiring team of staff and volunteers. They provide breakfast, lunches and food for an average of 480 homeless people six days a week. Their ‘Mission Statement’ is:
‘Inspired by the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, we at the Cappuchin Day Center welcome people in need of food aid who have no home or are socially excluded and respecting their dignity, provide a caring, pastoral, holistic and non judgemental service responsive to their needs’.
Fr Peter McVerry Trust: www.pmvtrust.ie.
Fr. Peter McVerry SJ has been working with Dublin’s young homeless for more than 30 years. During this time he has campaigned tirelessly for the rights of these young people. In 1979, he opened a hostel to address the urgent need for accommodation for young homeless people. Four years later he set up a charity called The Arrupe Society, to provide further housing and support. Renamed in 2005 as Peter McVerry Trust, the charity has progressed from providing a three bedroom flat in Ballymun to today's wide range of services catering for the diverse needs of young homeless people. Some services include an open access service, supported accommodation, drug services, under 18s hostels and apartments across the city to offer longer-term housing for those ready to live independently. We are proud to have helped raise funds for this worthy cause by having participated in the annual charity cycle to Wexford and are grateful to all those who have sponsored our trip.
